How Long Does Thinset Take to Dry Before Grouting?

Standard thin-set mortar needs about 24 hours at around 70°F before you grout or walk lightly on the tile. Custom VersaBond and LATICRETE 253 Gold both give 24 hours. Rapid-setting mortars are much faster: MAPEI Ultraflex LFT Rapid can be grouted after 3 to 4 hours. Heavy foot or vehicle traffic usually has to wait 7 to 10 days for standard mortars. Cold or humid conditions lengthen all of these times.

The thinset calculator tells you how many bags you need for your tile size and trowel notch.

Why wait before grouting?

Grouting too early can shift tiles that have not bonded yet, and the moisture still in the mortar can affect grout color. Large tiles and thick mortar beds hold more water and take longer than the minimum. A simple check is to press a fingernail into mortar squeezed out at the edge of a tile: if it dents, wait longer.

What slows thinset curing

  • Temperature. Data sheets measure at 70 to 73°F. Below that, curing slows; MAPEI notes that cold temperatures need extended protection before grouting.
  • Humidity and ventilation. Damp, closed rooms such as basements slow curing.
  • Tile and substrate. Dense porcelain on a non-absorbent surface, or very large tiles, keep the mortar moist longer than small ceramic tile on a porous backer.
  • Mortar thickness. A thicker bed from a large notch trowel takes longer to cure.

Rapid-setting or standard?

  • Choose rapid-setting when you need to grout the same day, for example a small bathroom or a busy kitchen.
  • Rapid-setting mortars have a shorter working time, so mix smaller batches.
  • Standard mortars give more time to adjust tiles and are usually cheaper per bag.

Frequently asked questions

Can I grout the same day?

With a rapid-setting mortar, yes, after the time on the bag (3 to 4 hours for Ultraflex LFT Rapid). With standard mortar, wait about 24 hours.

Can I walk on tile before grouting?

Lightly, after the minimum time, using boards to spread your weight if you must. Avoid kneeling on freshly set tile.

How long after grouting can I use the shower?

That depends on the grout; see how long grout takes to dry before showering. For tile choice, see porcelain vs ceramic tile.
