Enter the size of the lawn, how your sod farm cuts its sod (slabs, mini rolls or large rolls) and the pallet size. The calculator adds 5% for cuts and edges and tells you how many pieces and pallets to order.
How the sod calculator works
- Sod to order = lawn length × width × (1 + extra %).
- Pieces = sod to order ÷ area of one slab or roll, rounded up.
- Pallets = sod to order ÷ sq ft per pallet, rounded up.
Common sod sizes
| Form | Piece size | Covers | Pallet sizes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slabs | 16 × 24 in | 2.66 sq ft | 400, 450 or 500 sq ft |
| Mini rolls | 40 × 18 in | 5 sq ft | 400, 450 or 500 sq ft |
| Large rolls | 60 × 24 or 80 × 18 in | 10 sq ft | 500, 600 or 700 sq ft |
Worked example
A lawn of 50 × 20 ft is 1,000 sq ft. With 5% extra you order 1,050 sq ft: 1,050 ÷ 2.66 = 395 slabs, or 3 pallets of 450 sq ft.
Step by step: ordering and laying sod

Tips before you order
- Order 5% to 10% extra; curved beds and many edges need the higher end.
- Lay sod the day it arrives; it heats up and spoils on the pallet.
- A pallet can weigh 1,500 to 3,000 lb, more when wet, so plan where it will be dropped.
- Seeding costs less than sod; see the grass seed calculator.
